What Low Blood Pressure Is

Low blood pressure also known as hypotension, is the low pressure (tension) of blood  in the arteries.  Now let us know what arteries are. Arteries are the vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body.

  • Normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg.
  • Blood pressure lower than 100/60 mm Hg is considered low pressure.

When the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries the pressure in the blood arteries increases.  This is known as systolic pressure.  When the heart relaxes after the contraction the pressure in the arteries becomes the lowest. It is known as the diastolic pressure. The bottom number, the diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. Thus we can say that the diastolic pressure is the lowest one in the arteries.

Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure

Following are the symptoms of Low Blood Pressure or Hypotension:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Clammy skin
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of consciousness

Low blood pressure leads to inadequate supply of blood to vital organs like brain, heart, liver, etc.

How to Maintain Blood Pressure

Small quantities of food should be taken frequently: Snacks in between the meals should be taken in between the meal. It helps preventing the sudden drop in blood pressure.

Take Adequate Quantity of Salt:
Though excess of salt is bad, yet in case of low blood pressure adequate quantity of salt is very essential. Salt helps in increasing the blood pressure.

Drink More Liquids: To control the blood pressure adequate quantity of water should be drunk. Drink at least 3-4 litres of water. Besides this other beverages like coconut juice, fruit juice can also be taken. Tea and coffee also help in increasing the blood pressure.

Tulsi Leaves: Tulsi is called a heavenly herb. It is very useful in not only maintaining blood pressure but also in many other diseases.

Almond Paste: Soak 5 to 6 almonds overnight and peel them in them in the morning. Make a paste of it and boil them into a drink. Drink it every day. It helps a lot to prevent falling of blood pressure.

Munakka : Munakka or big raisins help lot in increasing blood pressure. Soak some munkakka in water overnight and then boil in milk. This drink helps a lot in increasing blood pressure.

Cross Legs While Sitting: Sitting cross-legged helps in increasing blood pressure. However, it can become a problem with people with high blood pressure.

Wear Tight Stockings:
Tight stockings help a lot in increasing blood pressure. It keeps the blood in the lower legs.

Some Other Precautions

A person with low blood pressure should avoid:

  • Lifting heavy objects
  • Standing at a one place for long time
  • Drinking more fluids when exercising or on hot days

No doubt, low blood pressure or hypotension can prove fatal if not cured well in time. However, we can see we can find remedy for this ailment in our kitchen cabinet.
