Periods or menstruation is the regular discharge of blood from the inner lining of the uterus through the vagina. The periods usually start between twelve to fifteen years of age. They may start even earlier and be considered normal. Bleeding lasts for 2 to 7 days. This cycle comes every 28 days. Periods are the signs that the woman are all set to give birth. It is considered an essential  biological process in  any woman. However, periods are coupled with severe pain and some other problems. These problems are cramping, bloating, mood swings, lower back pain, headachefatigue, heavy bleeding, etc.  It is common during this period.

Home Remedies to Relieve Pain During Menses

Massage with Sesame Oil: It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Its massage on the lower abdomen helps a lot in relieving pain, during menses.

Fenugreek (methi) Seeds: Fenugreek seeds are very good in relieving pain during the menses. Soak fenugreek seeds in water for 12 hours and then drink up the water.

Heat: A hot water bottle on the lower abdomen helps relaxing the muscles of the uterus. Sipping warm fluids or a having a shower of hot water can also help in relieving the pain.

Ginger and Black Pepper Tea: Ginger and black pepper tea can do wonders in relieving pain during the periods. It also helps in normalizing the irregular period and fights resultant fatigue.

Cumin Seeds: Herbal tea with cumin seeds helps in reducing the menstrual pain.

Herbs: Following herbs contain strong anti-inflammatory substances. These are natural period pain relievers :
    • Fennel seeds
    • Chamomile tea
    • Cinnamon seeds
    • Ginger seeds

    Besides these the following are some other ways to relieve menstrual pain:

    Exercising and Yoga: Exercising increases blood circulation in the pelvic region. Pranayama and Shavasana helps relaxing body thus relieving the pain due to menstruation.

    Foods to Avoid: the following foods should be avoided during menses:
      • Sugary drinks
      • Alcohol
      • Fatty fish
      • Cheese

      • Fast foods
      • Caffeine
      • Walnuts
      • Almonds
      • Pumpkin

       Cramps during periods can be mentioned. However above mentioned home remedies help a lot to relieve one from this pain.

      Some other Facts About Menses

       Following are some of the reasons that can lead to painful intense periods:

      • Heavy blood flow
      • Post-pregnancy; particularly after first  pregnancy
      • In the girls below twenty
      • Overproduction of prostaglandins ( this  hormone  increases period pain).
      • Growth of endometriosis in the womb. ( It is an abnormal uterine tissue growth that intensifies pain)
      • Birth control pills.

      Menstruation is a natural biological process in every woman.  However, there is shame, stigma and associated with it across different parts of the world even today.  We must understand that it is a process which signifies that a woman is ready for motherhood. We all know motherhood is a beauty experience.
