Autism Spectrum Disorders or ASD are a range of complex lifelong disabilities that affect the person with a communication disorder and also the people around them. ASD is in fact 3 common diseases:

  • Autism
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder
  • Asperger’s Disorder

The children with ASD can’t interact with others socially, they have problem with communication with others. They have lack of imagination.

Autism --- Diagnosis

Autism has not any medical test. The diagnosis is determined by a team of specialists through observations and testing the child and also by interviewing the child and their parents and guardians. Diagnosis of ASD is often made between 18 months and 3 years.

Causes of ASD

There are a number of theories regarding the causes of Autism. However, the doctors and scientists have not reached at any single conclusion regarding the cause of this disorder. As a result, no cure has been found to this disease.

It has been found that the children suffering from this disorder have certain selective eating behavior at different developmental stages. The diet may be restricted to 2 or 3 foods. They find it very difficult to accept any new food. As a result, they might suffer from nutrition deficiency.

Following are the feeding concerns among autistic children:

  • Continually eating instead of periodic eating.
  • Difficulty in accepting new types of foods.
  • Restricted intake due to colour or packaging of food.

It must be understood that changes in dietary intake is generally a slow process.  The modification of any sort of behavior should be specific according to each individual child and family situation.
