Methi (Fenugreek) – A Herb With Amazing Health Benefits

Fenugreek (Methi) has long been used in alternative medicine. Not only this it is used in Indian dishes since ages. Fenugreek or methi is a plant. It is around 2-3 feet tall. It has small white flowers, green leaves and pods that contain small, golden-brown seeds. It is also a common household spice (methi dana).

How to use Fenugreek
Fenugreek is used in many supplements. However, there is no single recommended dosage. The dosage of fenugreek varies from person to person and it also depends on the ailment the person is suffering from.  Supplements of fenugreek should be taken before or after lunch or dinner.

However, fenugreek,  known as methi in Hindi spoken areas is a vegetable that appears in abundance during the cooler months of the year. Health Benefits of Fenugreek (Methi)

Helpful in curing Diabetes: Taking fenugreek seeds may lower blood sugar levels with people suffering from diabetes. At least 5 grams of fenugreek should be taken for this. Doses lower than this may not cause any effect.

Menstrual Cramps: Fenugreek seeds can prove very effective in case of menstrual pain in women. 1800-2700 mg of fenugreek seed powder should be taken every day for the first 3 days of menstrual cycle followed by 900 mg of fenugreek powder for the remainder of the menstrual cycle. It is very beneficial in containing pain. The need of painkillers is said to be reduced.

Satisfaction in Sex (Men): Taking 600 mg of fenugreek seed extract every day increases interest in sex older men that have started losing interest in it.

Sexual Problems in Women: Like men taking 600 mg of fenugreek seed extract by women increases interest in sex for healthy younger women, who have low sex drive.

Reduces Obesity: According to early researches a fenugreek seed extract can be helpful in reducing obesity. However, the dosage of at least 392 mg three times can be effective. Dosage lower than this does not seem to have any effect.

Breast-feeding: According to some reports taking fenugreek capsules or drinking fenugreek tea after child birth can increase the production of milk in breastfeeding women.

Increasing Stamina in Younger Men: Taking fenugreek supplements daily increases stamina in younger men. It is also helpful in athletic activities as well as sexual performance.

Appetite Control: It has been noticed that taking of fenugreek increases fullness or satiety. In this way, it is very useful in controlling appetite.

Controls Cholesterol Levels: It has been found that use of fenugreek can lowers down cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

Heartburn: Taking of fenugreek for two weeks( the dosage and frequency might vary as per the prescription of the physician) can be quite helpful in reducing symptoms of heartburn.

Nutritional Value of Fenugreek
One tablespoon or about 10 grams of whole methi seeds has about 35 calories and several other nutrients as:

  • Fibre -- 2.5 grams
  • Iron -- 20% of the daily use
  • Fats --1 gram
  • Carbs -- 5 grams
  • Magnesium – 5% of the daily use
  • Manganese – 7% of the daily use

 Thus we can say that fenugreek has high nutritional value.

Side effects Of Fenugreek
There are very less side effects of taking fenugreek. We can say that these side effects are negligible as compared to its benefits.  People may feel reduced appetite, though good for obese people, it may be harmful for normal people.

It is very good to lower down the blood sugar level of the body. However, the people taking allopathic medicines for diabetes should be careful before taking it, since it can interfere with the routine medicine.

All the other side effects are also due to its interference with the routine medicine. Therefore the doctor should be consulted before taking it.
