Characteristics of the Kapha-dominant People
Kapha dominant people are quite lovable. They become good managers and they can calmly handle several issues simultaneously. They have good retentive power and they can remember even the minor details. They lead a regular life; however, they have a tendency of overeating.
The Kapha-dominant people have an impressive figure, big and beautiful eyes, well-shaped mouth, smooth skin and snow-white teeth.
Reasons for Kapha Imbalance and Resultant Diseases
There are many reasons for Kapha Imbalance. Generally, overeating, avoiding exercise and excessive sleep for a long time lead to the Kapha-imbalance. It leads to depression, obesity, diabetes type II, etc.
How to Balance Kapha?
The basic principle of Ayurveda is ‘like increases likes’. Therefore, by increasing the inherent qualities of Kapha we can increase it in our body, mind and spirit. Kapha is inherently cool, heavy and wet. Therefore, cold weather, heavy foods, orwet seasons increase Kapha. Naps during the daytime should be avoided.
Diet Recommended For Kapha-dominant People
Fruits like apple, berries, mangoes, peaches, pears and raisins are recommended. Dried fruits should be avoided.
Vegetables like red beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, eggplant, garlic, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, parsley, peas, radish, spinach, and sprouts are recommended.
Grains and Legumes
Barley, corn, millet, oats, basmati rice (small quantities) are recommended. All legumes except white beans and black lentils should be avoided however, azuki and black beans are good.
All sweeteners but organic honey and jaggery are recommended.
Herbs to Balance Kapha
There are some herbs that help maintain the Kapha balance. These herbs are bibhitaki, chitrak and punarvnava. These herbs are used since time immemorial by Ayurvedacharayas.
Life style to Balance Kapha
Kapha-dominant people are able to cope with a wide variety of temperatures; however the ideal environment for such people is warm and dry weather. Sports like jogging, hiking, biking, or competitive sports, especially during the morning time are best. Heating and aromatic scents, light and lively music can do wonders to balance Kapha. Self-motivation is a golden key for the kapha-dominant people.
Yoga to Balance Kapha
Many yoga asanas --- Tadasana, Utkatasana, and some yogic kriyas like kapalbhati are extremely beneficial to balance Kapha.
To know any of the imbalance we need to know the prakriti ( Prakriti is the inherent quality of an individual; if once formed can never be changed). It increases awareness of our natural strengths and challenges. Knowing prakriti is one of the positive steps towards understanding health.
